Nick Jonas - Champagne Problems
How many times have we been here before?
How many pieces have to break?
So many reasons not to celebrate
But I hate to see you cry so let's drink before goodbye
I got a bottle I've been saving up
Thought that we'd drink it all night, hey
We were the opposite of breaking up
Can't believe I'm losing you
We just opened up too soon
We got champagne problems
Only one way to solve 'em
Raising our glass cause it's our last
With these champagne problems
Just keep on, keep on drinking
Keep on, keep on drinking
Keep on, keep on...
How did our clothes end up all on the floor?
Didn't we just break each other's hearts?
Didn't you have one foot out of the door?
Better to fall in love than lose, wish I didn't have to
choose
We got champagne problems
Only one way to solve 'em
Raising our glass cause it's our last
With these champagne problems
Just keep on, keep on drinking
Keep on, keep on drinking
Keep on, keep on...
We got champagne problems
Oh my God, yeah, the room is spinning from the Perignon
(don't drop that alcohol)
And you're still with me but you're very gone
It feels so right but we both know it's wrong
When you got, when you got, when you got...
We got champagne problems
Only one way to solve 'em
Raising our glass cause it's our last
With these champagne problems
Just keep on, keep on drinking
Champagne problems
Only one way to solve 'em
Raising our glass cause it's our last
With these champagne problems
Just keep on, keep on drinking
Keep on, keep on drinking
Keep on, keep on...
The Synopsis
There is no clear synopsis in the music video, the camera follows the artist Nick Jonas drinking in the club and dancing his 'pain' away. From his facial expressions, it is clear that he is distressed at some points and is joyous at others. He also meets what could be his 'ex' or a 'random girl' at the club and they drunkenly reconcile.
Lyrics Analysis
'We got champagne problems' describes their problem as champagne. champagne is associated with wealth, luxury and is often used to mark a special occasion as a status symbol.
It could also mean, that they only thing they can do to get over these problems is to drink champagne.
'How many pieces have to break?' may be a reference to both his heart and his glass.
In terms of his heart; he doesn't want his heart to break into a million pieces and asking 'How many pieces have to break?' sounds needy and as if he is trying to find a resolve. It sounds as if he is trying to salvage whats left of his now 'past' relationship, suggesting he is willing to give up some of himself for the relationship but doesn't want it to go in vain. Although his heart will be incomplete, it wont be completely broken.
In terms of his glass; the meaning on the surface might mean that he has had to much to drink and has lost control and countless glasses or bottles even, have broken.
In addition, the lyric relates to his Digipak Album Art as it features him surrounded by broken glass, as you can see below.

I think that this tracking shot is a key shot and very effective at showing the pace in the club and also showing the scene. he moves to the beat of the song, making it more enjoyable and professional.

Key Shots, Camera Transitions and Edits
I think that this tracking shot is a key shot and very effective at showing the pace in the club and also showing the scene. he moves to the beat of the song, making it more enjoyable and professional.
The flicker effect is used halfway through the song and is timed to the beat of the music. I think this is very effective as it looks more professional and can be gratifying, making the video more enjoyable.
Throughout the whole music video, the lighting changes from high-key to low-key which is essential in a club setting. But after watching this scene I noticed that as he looks over it is still very bright but as soon as the girl leaves, the lighting changes to dark. I think this was done purposely as it looks as if shes hiding in the shadows from him.
Darkness mainly has bad connotations such as; evil and fear but also mystery.
Light is often associated with "the source of goodness".
Light and Dark are often seen as oppositions in the fight of good and evil. The same could be seen here as he is associated with light, and her with darkness. However I don't think they are against each other, but rather when she leaves there is only darkness, she is the light in his life.
